I'm in a bit different setting as I'm self-employed. Yes, I use all the social networks for business. I write and publish articles on writing, the publishing business, highlight authors, speak about promotion, and to achieve name recognition.

Employers have the right, of course, to limit their employees time to work at hand during business hours. After hours, I feel employers should have no say in what an individual does with their time. The only exception would be if the the actions of the employee could impact negatively upon the company's reputation--but I don't see that with social networks. Porn networks and sex clubs yeah. Otherwise, what does it matter?

At our publishing company I am now receiving nearly half of my daily contacts from customers and authors via Facebook. It is simply a reality that people 35 and under use Facebook more than just about any other medium. Not allowing access to Facebook is foolish.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Facebook is a great tool for businesses and the worst thing they could do is ban it. Instead businesses need to realize what a powerful medium Facebook and other social media can be to them. If they would tap into these social media sites they could increase awareness about their business which would really benefit them.
